Project Update                                                                            March 20, 2012
From the Editor
Tom Coleman

In the first few email Updates, I will be explaining the various features of our website.  Today, I am focusing on our Newsfeed.

Each week, Anne Kincaid searches for news stories involving issues pertaining to disability and abuse.  Dr. Baladerian then selects the dozen or so stories that best represent the events of that week.

I upload the entire list of the current stories to the Newsfeed section of our website.  Each story headline has a link to the full story online.  The prior week's list of stories is placed in the Newsfeed Archives for future reference.

Dr. Nora's top stories are sent out to Listserv subscribers, with a link to the Newsfeed section of our website so people can reference the complete list of current stories or those found in the Newsfeed Archives.

Our weekly Newsfeed and Newsfeed Archives are documenting the scope and extent of the problem of abuse of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

From the comments we have received, the Newsfeed is a valuable resource for advocates, educators, and service providers.

Updates are sent periodically to Consultants, Listserv Subscribers, and others who support the goals of the Disability and Abuse Project.  These updates are intended to keep you informed of our activities.  We always welcome your feedback and suggestions.
From the Project Director
Nora Baladerian

I spent the week in Huntsville, Alabama at the 28th National Symposium on Child Abuse.  I have been making the annual trek to Huntsville for this conference for at least 21 years, probably longer.

This year I am making two presentations with my colleague, Lori Brown.  Lori is a forensic interviewer specializing in victims with intellectual disabilities.

Visit my blog for more information about why I find this conference to be so special.  I will be writing more about this year's experience in my blog next week.

Each April since 1981, the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) has worked with local communities to observe National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) by promoting victims' rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.
In 2008, Dr. Nora Baladerian received an award from the Attorney General of the United States for her years of service to victims with disabilities.
